Introduce yourself

Meet Sylvia, from the Netherlands where she grew up in a small city but moved to the vibrant city of Amsterdam at a very young age. After finishing her degree in Hotel & Event Management, she moved to Lisbon.

What or who inspired you to become a business owner?

She started washing dishes in a French restaurant in her hometown and after that in an Italian restaurant as a waitress. One of the business owners she worked for, Gwynneth taught her lots about customer service and inspired her to head in this direction. Before turning 18, she already started dreaming of running her own place.

What product or service do you offer?

@omalta offers tapas and burgers and a wide variety of drinks; cocktails, wine and craft beer. Besides offering quality products, they pay much attention to service. Their customers need to feel safe and comfortable. Sylvia believes it’s key to remember returning customers, conversations had and preferences mentioned. They run the business as a weekly hangout for locals, both national and international.

What is your company’s mission and your goals?

They want to contribute to a healthy balance between work and fun. The working class of Lisbon deserves to disconnect after work, in a safe and happy place where people care about connection and kindness. The bistro’s mission is to provide a place like this.

How does your service or product help other women?

“Every big city can be quite intimidating for solo women, especially if you’re new to the city or don’t have many like-minded people around you. Providing a place where people come to visit alone helps them to feel more connected to the neighborhood. The bistro is frequently being called “my second home”, “my living room” or “central Perk”. Totally go and experience this amazing place!
